Malindi needs modern airport, tourism stakeholders tell State

By |

Tourism stakeholders in Malindi have asked the government for a modern, well-equipped airport that can accommodate international flights and ease access to the town, as part of efforts to increase visitor numbers.

During a public participation exercise that Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua attended on Saturday, they said this is one of the key issues for the ministry as it affects Malindi, Watamu and other parts of Kilifi County.

The exercise aimed to gather input on how to improve and revive the tourism industry in the county.

Infrastructure became the primary concern, with the stakeholders citing the airport's expansion as a critical first step in drawing additional visitors.

They emphasised the need for an airport that can handle planes from all over the world and make it simpler to get to the town.

In his response to the plea, Mutua noted that the tourism industry can only grow where there is adequate infrastructure and security.

"Rest assured all concerns will be addressed promptly, with solutions sought and implemented within the shortest time possible," he said, adding he will quickly initiate street lighting projects in Malindi town, a project funded by the national government.

"This initiative is a crucial part of ongoing efforts to revitalise Malindi as a vibrant tourist destination," he said, noting that a public participation exercise in Malindi obtained insights from stakeholders including hotel owners, tour operators, residents, and representatives of community organisations.

Regarding public sanitation, the stakeholders noted that hygienic, well-maintained facilities offer tourists satisfying experiences hence the need for renovations across Malindi.

The meeting further discussed the town's visual appeal, saying it needs to be improved via the protection of its natural aspects and cleanliness.

Participants called for regular beach cleanups, tighter security, and a steady supply of electricity to encourage economic activities that will in turn help attract investors.

Also discussed were road networks, which the stakeholders said must be maintained for easier movement.

Mutua acknowledged that Malindi, "known for its pristine beaches and captivating attractions, has faced challenges in recent years, with many investors, particularly of Italian origin, departing".

"I am resolute in my determination to restore Malindi to its former glory," he said, urging collaboration.
